The Estimated Cost of Attendance

There are many costs to consider when a student goes to college, both direct and indirect. Besides tuition, a student will need a place to stay and meals to eat. Travel expenses to and from campus, books and materials for classes, and money for laundry, toiletries, and trips to New Haven's famous pizzerias with friends should all be taken into account when estimating total costs.

Yale considers all of these factors when calculating the Estimated Cost of Attendance for one academic year. Each student's budget for the academic year includes both billed expenses and unbilled expenses.

Families receiving a Yale financial aid award do not pay the full cost of attendance. Instead, Yale calculates an Expected Family Contribution based on the Estimated Cost of Attendance and a family's specific Demonstrated Financial Need, which is determined through the financial aid application process. Yale is committed to covering 100% of every family's Demonstrated Financial Need with a financial aid award that does not require loans. For more information, see Affordability.

Planning for four years

As you plan financially for education costs over the next four years, please keep these points in mind:

  • Any changes in the cost of attendance from year to year are mirrored by changes in students' financial aid awards.
  • Every family’s circumstances are reevaluated each year to ensure that the financial aid award is based on current financial information. For more information, see Renewing Your Award.
  • A suggested division of costs between students and parents is included in every Expected Family Contribution. Most undergraduates meet their suggested division, called the Student Share, with a combination of term-time and summer employment or an outside merit-based scholarship. For more information, see Student Share.

International students and U.S. taxes

Financial Aid from Yale may have tax implications for international students as determined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of the United States.

  • International students whose country does not have a tax treaty with the United States will be assessed 14% tax on any Yale financial aid in excess of tuition.  We refer to this as Federal Tax Withholding and it is charged to your student YalePay account each semester.
  • If your country has a tax treaty with the U.S., you may not be subject to the federal tax withholding  charge once you visit the Yale International Tax Office and complete the Foreign National Information System (FNIS) application.
  • Students who come from countries that do not have a tax treaty will have their tax charge covered in their first and last terms of enrollment at Yale.
  • Students are required to pay their tax withholding charge for the intervening terms.  Students will be required to file a U.S. 1040-NR tax return and forward a copy to the Office of Undergraduate Financial Aid.  The actual tax reimbursement will be determined by reviewing the student tax return.  The tax scholarship will only cover taxes on financial aid, not wages or taxes for any other purpose.
