Although Yale does not award merit-based scholarships, many Yale students are recognized financially for their academic and extracurricular talents by outside organizations. We encourage you to pursue these outside awards, which can significantly reduce or eliminate your Student Share amount.
For information on how merit scholarships affect the financial aid award, see Scholarships and Grants.

The resources listed below can help you begin your search for merit scholarships. We encourage you to seek out other resources and to use any scholarship search aid you find useful.
Government sites
The U.S. government provides resources to help both U.S. and international students find scholarships for study at American universities.
- Federal Student Aid website: Finding and Applying for Scholarships
- U.S. Dept. of Labor's CareerOneStop: Scholarship Finder (for U.S. and international citizens)
- U.S. Dept. of State’s EducationUSA: Finance Your Studies (for international citizens)
Private sites
Yale does not endorse any private scholarship search sites, but some of our students have used the sites below successfully in recent years.
Before you begin your search, we recommend that you review information from the Federal Student Aid website on avoiding financial aid scams.
U.S. military benefits
The U.S. government offers a variety of education benefits for veterans and active service members. For more information, see Military Benefits and Financial Aid.
Notifying Yale about outside awards
- New students receiving financial aid and outside scholarships will be required to submit an Outside Scholarship/Resource Information form.
- Continuing students who will be receiving outside scholarships should submit an Outside Scholarship/Resource Information form.
- Students who are not receiving Yale financial aid should report outside resources or merit scholarships using the Outside Scholarship/Resource Information form so the credit(s) can be applied to their term bill.
Enrollment verification for scholarship agencies
Scholarship agencies require verification that you are enrolled at Yale before they will release your award funds. Agency representatives can usually verify enrollment by checking the National Student Clearinghouse website. Questions about enrollment verification may be directed to the University Registrar's Office.
